The Black Cat

Classic Reboot

An immersive reading experience for Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, ‘The Black Cat’, guiding readers through a journey similar to that presented in the story. Focusing on themes of ‘justice’ and ‘truth’, this piece uses horror conventions and design strategy to create a piece one would want to hold onto forever.

Background

This project worked on applying production knowledge through creation of a mini publication packaging, offering a sample from a classic of fiction work in the public domain. I chose to focus on Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Black Cat’, with the literary package enhanced by inventive graphic design in a self-contained package of items, containing items relating to the story; a missing poster, the designed text extract, and newspaper clippings.

Through this assignment, we were required to focus on the potential of materials and forms for enhancing communication, with the quality of the construction and photographic documentation of prototypes an important part of the project.

We had to demonstrate production techniques of a die cut, a fold, CMYK printing with a spot Pantone colour, and an embellishment of our choice. In the final productions, these were to be printed, or at least Photoshopped to appear as such through the photographed prototype.

Print Ready

This design required print-ready specification sheets, to ensure that these irregular prints would be done correctly at any commercial printing in a professional, bulk-production setting.
